Summer Campers: Are You Open?

I know that this next week at camp is going to be fun. Last year was SO MUCH FUN, and frankly, Forest Home is going to be more fun than that. You'll see :)

I'm hoping that this week is so much more than fun for you. I'm hoping that you're open to something more. Are you open to what God has planned? Are you going to give God a fair chance to speak into your life, to show you areas where you can grow, and to encourage you in your walk? Are you ready to participate and dig in? I hope that you are. I hope that you'll do much more than just sit back and watch.

Take a minute and think about any obstacles that might be in front of you right now. Anything that might distract you or get in the way of you being open.

I'm doing the same thing. I'm your pastor, but I'm getting on that bus this Sunday ready for God to do whatever He wants to do. I'm going to listen and watch and listen some more... because God's not done growing me yet!

Join me :)

Hands open. Ready to let go of whatever I need to let go of, and ready for God to give me whatever He'd like to give me. Open.

Summer Camp Update!

Hello from the High School Ministry!

We hope you are all excited about Summer Camp! It is coming up so quickly. We wanted to remind you about a few things and also let you know some fun and important things that your student will need to know to be ready for camp.

We will be doing a mandatory bag drop off, medicine/nurse check, and finalizing any paperwork needed on Saturday the17th at 6p in the Student Center. This is so that we can have everything ready to go when your student is dropped off for camp on Sunday morning. Please have everything packed and have it at the church on Saturday night. This does not include your carry on items, only your luggage that will go under the buses. It is very important that you be there on Saturday night, not only for the bag drop off but also to do the nurse check. There is a new law in the state of California that is requiring any campers be checked by a nurse within 24 hours of the start of camp. Every camper and leader must have this completed in order to attend camp.

The camp is also requiring that we have the medical forms to them no later then Sunday the 4th. I have attached the form to this email. Please complete the form and email or fax it back to me at 480.539.1028. You may also drop by the church office and fill them out as well, they are located at the front office for your convenience.

Final payment is due no later that July 11th. You can bring in a check for the balance owed either to the church office or over this coming weekend during the services. If we do not receive your balance by the 11th we will automatically charge the card we have on file for you from your initial online registration. If you have any questions or concerns about final payment or need your balance, please feel free to contact me.

Also, a reminder that there are to be NO cell phones, ipods, or any gaming systems allowed on the bus or at camp. This is a rule that the camp enforces pretty strictly. This will give us all some time to talk and spend some quality time together as a group.

You may send your student mail while they are at camp. Here is the address for you to do that.

Okay, now onto the fun stuff! This year at camp there will be a Field Day Competition and Forest Home is bringing back Wednesday "Plaid Day". We really want to encourage all of the students to try and be as creative as they can and wear as much plaid as possible on Wednesday. Your student can get quite creative so have some fun with this!

Also, there is a Thursday Night Banquet at camp. It will be a "MeTV Premiere". This is not just any premiere, it's a 1980's premiere. Prepare your student to bring all the 80's gear they can get their hands on so they can dress up for the final night together at camp. We're talking any flavor of 80's clothes they can find: sporty, hair band rocker, preppy, or dressy. You get the idea. As always, “modest is the hottest”.

Please make sure that we receive all of your paperwork in and make sure you clear your calendar for the Saturday night bag drop off and nurse check. Have fun and be creative with the competition day and the banquet night preperations with your student. Again, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me or give me a call.

A Message for our Graduating Seniors

I've only been with this group of students for one year, but I'm already confident of a few things. They were meant for amazing things, and I believe that they're going to achieve those things.

Tonight we will say goodbye to our Senior class. They're with us this Sunday one more time, but this is our last chance to get some of them together in one place. It's a smaller group than I expected- maybe because Finals Week is upon them. Here are a few of the things I plan on sharing with them:

  • This is not the Finish Line of your faith. In fact, this is in many ways the Starting Line. If there was ever a time to get serious about your relationship with Jesus and his Church, this is it.
  • This is the biggest disconnecting point for most students. Even the most committed High School students often times abandon their faith, either suddenly or gradually.
  • We are sending you out into the world, and we've done everything we can to get you ready. You are the light of the world, so we're lifting the bowl of buildings and camps and sending you out to shine.
  • Serve. Serve. Serve. Serve. Serve the church, serve your future classmates, serve everyone.
  • Stay connected with your mentors & small group leaders. We promise to stay connected with you. You'll need us now more than ever.
  • Do not be afraid. You are the light of the world. God is for you.
  • Please don't go. We'll miss you.

Ok that last one is a joke, haha! I've tried to convince a handful of our seniors to fail their senior year and repeat it with us, but to no avail.

I'm praying that these students will continue to love Jesus, in light of his great love for them. I'm challenging them to go out and become cultural leaders and influencers. I want them to dream and to aspire and to take risks, and to not let these four years of life suck the life out of them in the name of progress.

Don't settle for ordinary or dream small dreams. You've been empowered to change the world, now go do it.

Summer Camp Recap

Summer Camp 2010 was everything we had hoped for and more. We took 103 people to camp this year. We came home as close as a handful. What I mean is, we came home feeling connected, bonded, unified, and solidified in an amazing way... which is remarkable when you think about how big that group is. Big numbers usually mean less interpersonal connection overall. Not with out group. I can't explain it. I've deleted a few sentences trying to... you just need to believe me. This group is united!!!

As your kids come home, my hope is that you'll acknowledge whatever God might have done, and encourage whatever response your kids have. Maybe your kid came home on a "camp high". They're ready to conquer the world. Encourage that! Or maybe your kid came home feeling numb and sad because they didn't feel whatever "high" everyone else felt. God is patient, so I am too. You must be patient, and not place some yoke of expectation on them that becomes a burden.

God is so patient with us. Lets mimic Him.
